Lead Slowing-Down Spectrometry Analysis of Data from Measurements on Nuclear Fuel
نویسندگان
چکیده
Improved nondestructive assay of isotopic masses in used nuclear fuel would be valuable for nuclear safeguards operations associated with the transport, storage, and reprocessing of used nuclear fuel. Our collaboration is examining the feasibility of using lead slowing-down spectrometry techniques to assay the isotopic fissile masses in used nuclear fuel assemblies. We present the application of our analysis algorithms to measurements conducted with a lead spectrometer. The measurements involved a single fresh fuel pin and discrete Pu and U samples. We are able to describe the isotopic fissile masses with rootmean-square errors over seven different configurations to 6.3% for Pu and 2.7% for U. Significant effort is yet needed to demonstrate the applicability of these algorithms for used-fuel assemblies, but the results reported here are encouraging in demonstrating that we are making progress toward that goal.

Fission Physics and Cross Section Measurements with a Lead Slowing down Spectrometer
A Lead Slowing Down Spectrometer (LSDS) provides a high neutron flux environment that enables measurements of small samples (∼μg) or samples with small cross sections (tens of μb). The LSDS at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) was previously used for fission cross section measurements and for studies of methods for assay of used nuclear fuel. The effective energy range for the LSDS is 0.1 ...

Research on accelerator driven systems (ADS), related new fuels and their ability for nuclear waste incineration has led to a revival of interest in nuclear cross sections of many nuclides over a large energy range. Discrepancies observed between nuclear data bases require new measurements in several cases. A complete measurement of such cross sections including resonance resolution consists of...

The use of a Lead Slowing-Down Spectrometer (LSDS) is considered as a possible option for nondestructive assay of fissile material in used (spent) nuclear fuel. The primary objective is to quantify the remaining fissile content of the fuel consisting mainly of Pu and U. The characterization of spent fuel is particularly important for nuclear safeguards and for determining the fuel burn-up level...

The use of a lead slowing-down spectrometer (LSDS) is considered as a possible option for nondestructive assay of fissile material of used nuclear fuel. The primary objective is to quantify fissile isotopes, particularly 239Pu and 235U, via a direct measurement distinguishing them through their characteristic fission spectra in the LSDS. In this paper, we present several assay measurements perf...

Tehran Research Reactor (T.R.R.) is a pool-type, 5 MW thermal research reactor.
